Special events are a great way to bring together all your geeky friends. They are also an opportunity for local businesses to connect with geeks and share in the fun. As more venues offer special events to celebrate our geeky interests, travellers are taking a bit more time to explore the area and see what else is available too!
SkyScanner’s survey in 2025 showed a huge increase for flight searches to worldwide gaming conventions, including over 500% for GamesCon in Cologne (Germany) and over 160% for TwitchCon in San Deigo (USA).

Video Game Tourism isn’t the only area gaining a boost. Geek conventions all around the world benefit from mass travel. Comiket (aka Tokyo Comic Con), next scheduled for December 2025, is the largest comic convention in the world. Bringing together comics, manga, and anime, this convention brings in over 750,000 for the weekend event held twice a year. For a great example of how to prepare for a special geeky event, stay tuned for our upcoming travel to Melbourne for PAX Aus 2025, including our panel on Video Game Tourism (Friday 8 October 2025, at 8.30 pm in the DropBear Theatre).
That Special Geeky Place
There are some places that are simply special for every geek fandom. LEGO House in Billund, Denmark. Globe Theatre in London, United Kingdom. Empire State Building in New York, USA. These iconic locations don’t belong to a particular fandom, but they are special for geeks everywhere. They can be the dream destination for any holiday, and we know how special that is.
